You might think playing golf like a warrior means playing aggressive…going for the miracle golf shots. This is hardly the case….

A great warrior has learnt how to survey the battlefield and their enemies with uncanny precision…A great golfer has learnt how to survey the golf course and their opponents through the fine art of course management!…and a little psychology.

What is the fine art of course management you say? It all starts with knowing your limits. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses, and knowing your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses…and of course know the golf course you are playing on…this is your battlefield!

All great golfers know their limits and play within them. So many high handicap golfers try for the “miracle shot” when they are in trouble…This usually ends up costing them at least 10 strokes or more a round (depending on their level).

Think about it, attempting to hit the miracle golf shot you can execute correctly one in ten times is a recipe for disaster…this makes for great drama…remember Tin Cup? How bout Jean Van de Velde when he choked in the ’99 British Open? They both went for the miracle shot.

The truth is going for the miracle shot when everything is on the line may make for great T.V. drama; however this attitude will absolutely crush your golf scores!

Do you hit driver on a 300 yard par 4 even though you can only drive the ball 250? The 50 yard pitch shot is one of the hardest shots in golf…even for the pros. Rather than reaching for the big stick, leave yourself 100 yards for your second shot. For most good golfers 100 yards is a full pitching wedge which they can hit in their sleep.

Plan on leaving the golf ball at your “sweet spot” distance from the hole…play golf like warrior on the battle field!…think and plan ahead…know your strengths…and your weaknesses!

The fact of the matter is, if you plan on leaving the golf ball at your “sweet spot” distance from the hole, you will dramatically improve your chances of not only hitting more greens in regulation, but parring more holes. For some this is a 100 yards, some 120 yards, learn what your sweet spot distance is and practice that shot over and over at the range until you can hit that shot in your sleep.

It’s very; very simple – they all have great short games. The way they play the shots on and just off the green are the real key to shooting low scores and reducing your all-important handicap.
So, down to basics, where do we start to improve our short game and get the ball in that hole in fewer shots?

OK, so where too begin. Lets start with the two fundamental questions we should be asking ourselves.

Question number one is:
“Can I use my putter?”
Question number two is:
“If not, can I use my putting stroke with another club?”

Now obviously you cannot use your putter if conditions are against you, all things in golf are judgement calls and the quality of your decision will reflect in your scores. The key to this concept is that it’s easier to roll a ball towards the hole than it is to judge a shot that spends most of its way to the whole time in the air. It also means you can retain control without having to take too much of a back swing where errors can creep in. Accuracy always decreases the more the club head rises during the back swing – it’s a sad but true fact.

If you are really serious about improving your golf game you need to concentrate on your short game. The old saying is “Drive for show – Putt for dough” and you know what that’s absolutely goddam right.

Now I like to stand on the tee and give the ball a smack as much as the next guy, but you know what, that don’t always get the job done The short game need not be difficult it just requires a modified approach and a little insider knowledge.

The one plane golf swing is credited to Jim Hardy. Hardy first thought that in golf, there are two fundamental sets: a two plane swing and the one plane swing. Though there are a lot of swing variations, every golfer exhibits characteristics of any of the two fundamentals sets. Hardy also pointed out that the two cannot be combined. You cannot get parts from the two plane swing and then integrate them in a one plane swing and vice versa.

There are golf experts who think that if golf players are going to be categorized, they can fall under the two fundamental sets. The ideas presented by Hardy, golf experts say, can help better understand the physics of the golf swing. This entry is going to focus on one plane golf swing.

In the one plane golf swing, the spine angle is further bent over when addressing. This allows the player’s shoulders to rotate, resulting to a swing. Hardy said that to be able to swing perfectly, the hands should be located under or inside one’s chin during time of address. During backswing, the secret is to swing the arms around. However, limit this behind one’s body instead of moving the arms toward the front.

During transition, what you need to do is to rotate your body towards the left. You should do this, however, after you have placed your weight to the left side of your body. You will notice that there’s an effortless rotation. For the downswing, the golfer will have more freedom to rotate. One’s club as well as arms and shoulders are already positioned properly.

So those are the fundamentals of the one plane golf swing. Hopefully you can use these tips to improve your own golf swing and lower your score.

To achieve that, a correct golf swing sequence will give you the power and control to a golf game.

When you improve the basic fundamentals of a correct golf swing sequence, you will hit the ball
farther and straighter with very little effort.

Although there are no quick fixes to having a correct golf swing, here are some basic tips to a correct golf swing sequence-

1) Grip – A grip that is too strong or too weak will not give you a correct golf swing first up. A balance of the grip is needed every time you address the ball. As well ,the angle the club lies in your hand is critical.

2) Balanced Posture – A Key requirement of a correct golf swing, but importantly protects your back and aligns your body into a good position.

- Bend from the hips whilst keeping your back straight;

- Your feet shoulder width apart;

- Legs are flexed at a minimum;

- Hands and arm should hang directly below the shoulder.

3) Pivot – How you move your body will determine the golf swing sequence; the back swing, the down swing, impact and post impact.

- At address, left arm is straight, right arm is slightly bent and elbows close together. With a proper grip, posture and pivot, your Hands and arms will start the back swing, and swing the club.

Your body turns in a controlled manner to assist this golf swing, promoting arm leverage which will allow a full swing of the left hand and arm.

At the top of the back swing, left arm should be extended as far as possible whilst the right elbow is bent in, pointing towards the ground. During this back swing, the right leg must remained flexed, which allows a full body turn for a correct golf swing.

As you can see, the back swing is crucial to an entire golf swing sequence!

- A correct golf down swing will start from the legs and hips, not your hands and arms. Hold your shoulders in the fully turned position as the left hand and arm begins to swing down.

- Shoulders must be squared at impact for a powerful swing into and along the intended line of flight. Your left arm should be straight, and right arm almost straight.

4) Post impact, follow through with your stroke to complete a golf swing.

5) Like any other sport, you should warm up before a game of golf by stretching the muscles for optimal performance, and hence allow a full correct golf swing for power.

6) Use golf specific exercises for added strength and flexibility to your body muscles. At times, a poor golf swing can be attributed to muscle fatigue. A Correct golf swing requires endurance and adaptability of the body muscle over a long session of golf. With added strength and endurance, you will be ensuring correct golf swing techniques.

Without question, the more focus on the smaller fundamentals of a correct golf swing sequence will result in effortless power, and the more strokes shaved off a golf game.

Stance

A consistent position helps develop a consistent swing. A square stance will encourage a square impact. Keep feet perfectly parallel to the target line. If you imagine standing on a train track your feet are against one rail the ball is next to the other. Develop a comfortable standing position with your feet directly below your shoulders with your toes slightly outward facing.

Position the ball 2-3 inches inside the left heel for most shots. If it is too far forward you will be more likely to slice.

Moving one foot slightly forward will enable either fade (outside to inside) or draw (inside to outside). Experiment with the shot direction on how much you move your foot.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do always check the position of the ball using your clubs aligned on the ground.

Do take your time to settle into your stance and get relaxed.

Do be consistent with your stance.

Grip

A good grip is the foundation of your golf swing, enabling greater control and reducing your tendency to slice. A good grip helps keep the club-head square at impact and stops the shaft from rotating in your hands.

The most popular grip used by professional golfers is the Vardon grip.

Place your little finger on the lower hand on the club (right hand for a right-handed player – known as the trailing hand) and place it between the index and middle finger on the top hand (known as the lead hand). The thumb of the lead-hand should fit in the lifeline of the trailing hand (the V). Look to get a relaxed and comfortable feel, a tight grip will hinder your swing. The V’s formed by the index finger and thumbs on both hands point between the chin and right shoulder. Turning hands anti-clockwise on the club shaft produces a weak grip, promoting a left-to-right flight of the ball (slice). Turning hands clockwise produces a strong grip, promoting a right-to-left flight of the ball (hook).

Do’s and Don’ts

Don’t grip the club too tightly

Do keep the rubber grips on your club handles in good condition. Worn grips cause problems by forcing you to hold the club too tightly.

Do get a feel for the grip by practising frequently gripping and re-gripping the club regularly.

Alignment

When you are practicing, make sure your use you clubs as alignment. Lay one club on the ground parallel to the target line and another from toe to toe indicating the direction of your stance. To indicate the ball position, lay another club at 90deg’s to the target line extending backward from the ball toward your feet. Now check it all. When you are happy with the alignment you can a club across your shoulders, hips and thighs to check everything is aligned parallel to the target!

Do’s and Don’ts

Do check, check and check again, it will be invaluable to troubleshoot any problems.

Don’t leave the club between your feet longer than necessary but feel free to leave one club on the ground parallel to the target line during practice sessions.



Swing Path

To get a straight shot you require an inside to square i.e. hitting the ball squarely swing-path. An inside to outside swing-path encourages a hook, outside to inside swing-path a slice. Imagine a line extending through the ball to the target, your goal is a swing-path that starts on the inside striking the ball while moving slightly to the outside.

Also you can direct the ball with the club face – straight 90deg to the ball

In this article, I will briefly discuss 5 of the most important golf swing basic fundamentals that you should be aware of. Master them, and then you’ll be hitting like a pro.

Golf Swing Basic Tip #1: Your “golf swing” starts off before you even get into your golf stance. You should be considering the mental part of the game (many beginners don’t do this, and it causes them to hit the ball into the pond or woods). This is the time to make a mental map of the entire area, and figure out a specific spot you would like the ball to land at. Concentrate on hitting it towards that area. Chances are, if you’re just starting, you may not be able to get it at your intended destination. But as you get more experienced, your shots will be more accurate and then this golf swing basic fundamental will become essential. Remember to keep your mental focus, and you’ll reach your target easily.

Golf Swing Basic Tip #2: You should consider how to hold the golf grip on your club. If you find that your grip is too relaxed, then chances are you won’t hit correctly. You may end up slicing the ball. If you find that your grip is too tight, you may end up hooking the shot and hit the ball far from your intended spot. You have to experiment to find the proper grip level for yourself. Make sure that you’re holding the golf grip correctly too. If you’re using an interlocking, overlapping, or ten finger grip, make sure that you’re holding it right. You may need to experiment with the proper type of grip method too.

Golf Swing Basic Tip #3: A big mistake that many new players make is in their backswing: they just casually raise the club for the backswing. If you do this, then you’ll have to correct it or chances are, you won’t hit the ball far. When you do your backswing, you should be twisting your body. When you do this, the energy in your muscles is stored as potential energy. When the downswing comes, all of your potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, which transfers to the ball and sends it flying. So as I said before, you need to twist your body to generate a hitting momentum. Then as you’re winding up, next comes the backswing…

Golf Swing Basic Tip #4: In order to get a good backswing, you have to make sure your entire movement is 100% smooth. Your backswing is more essential for hitting the ball further, but when you’re going in for the down swing, make sure you bring your club’s head downwards swiftly. Remember that only your arms and upper body should be doing the swinging; not your wrists and hands!

Golf Swing Basic Tip #5: In conjunction with golf swing basic tips #3 and 4, your pivot movement has to be done correctly. As I said before, your upper body movement has to be correct – if you’re right handed, then your left shoulder and hips have to be aligned correctly as your weight is being transferred to your right foot (vice versa for left-handed people). Remember to keep your entire movement swift and smooth.

Just keep all five of these important golf swing basic fundamentals in your head as you’re playing. Keep a clam mind and stay focused – you’ll eventually master these after playing for a while. Follow these golf swing basic fundamentals and you’ll notice your strokes dropping in no time.
