Many golfers do not realize this, but the grip is the most important aspect of the golf swing. Your grip is the only connection you have with your golf club. Many good golfers do not have the greatest swings, but they ALL have good grips. The grip is absolutely essential to perfecting your golf game. Here are a few tips to help you learn how to grip a golf club the right way.

To start, there are three basic grip types you should be aware of: interlocking, overlapping, and ten finger (or baseball grip). Which of the three is the right grip for you? That will depend on which one feel most comfortable and natural to you. The grip that feels the most comfortable, will more than likely produce the best results for you.

The interlocking grip consists of interlocking your left index finger and your right pinky finger underneath the golf club. The overlapping grip is similar to the interlocking grip, but instead the right pinky finger is placed over the left index finger. With the baseball grip, those two fingers do not overlap or interlock, they just simply meet together. In order to grip a golf club properly, you first need to determine which type of grip you will use.

You want to make sure your hands are relaxed when holding the golf club. If you grip your golf club too tightly, your swing is going to suffer. The more relaxed your grip is, the farther and straighter you will hit the ball. That being said, you do not want an extremely loose grip either. The ideal golf grip is a comfortable medium between tense and loose.

If your golf game is suffering, the culprit could very likely be your grip. An improper grip will make your golf game seem like a real chore, rather than the fun activity it is. Remember that practice is the key when learning how to grip a golf club to be more successful in your golf game.

2. In addition to a great short game you must have the ability to keep your mind focused on your goals. More importantly, you should focus on one shot at a time as your goal. Focusing on each shot and not worrying about the past or future is what enables the best golfers in the world to play great golf without cluttering their minds with complex thoughts.

3. Last but not least you need to develop a golf swing that is simple to repeat and performs under pressure. Even the best players in the world are constantly tinkering with their golf swings in order to play better golf and shoot under 80. You should be doing the same if you want to have the most success possible from this crazy but fun game of golf!

I have often been asked what I think the most important part of the setup is when you’re getting ready to drive a golf ball. I dont know if there is one answer to that question.

The way I answer it is based on what Ive observed over the past 30 years of teaching.

After youve addressed the golf ball, and this is not an easy thing to see, you might have to have someone watch. Or, Ill tell you how to check for yourself.

After youve addressed the golf ball and you’re all ready to hit, I would say that 90% of the people that struggle with the driver have their shoulders aimed way off to the left.

Now, why? Its pretty simple. Oh, I dont know, 80% of the golfing public has a driver golf slice. So, if you slice the golf ball, you’re going to try to aim off to the side, so when it recovers and comes back around its in play.

Now, unfortunately, for those of you that have a driver golf slice, simply by squaring your shoulders up, that isnt going to take away the slice. But its going to encourage the golf club to swing more from inside than from outside, and it will help it a lot.

You may need a grip change. But theres no question about it, the most important part of the setup for the driver has to be the shoulders.

Make sure they’re aimed parallel to your feet, knees and hips going left of the target.

Now, if you’re driving the golf ball poorly and not very consistent, let me give you these two golf swing instruction pearls. They go hand in hand.

And I promise you this will help you find out if your problem with your driver is in the backswing.

For you to become a really good driver of the golf ball and consistent, the shoulders have to turn. The only way they can turn in the backswing is if you have your chin up and not down.

Most mistakes that Ive seen with amateur golfers in their difficulties of driving the golf ball is their posture.

Their head is too far down. The only thing your shoulders can do is go up in the air. You wont have the ability to swing the golf club around you. You wont have the chance of your shoulders turning.

So, the best golf swing instruction I can give you is, the next time out, after youve addressed the golf ball, gone through your routine and you’re almost ready to swing the golf club back, simply lift your chin up in the air an inch or two. And dont forget that your shoulder should turn in the backswing.

If you have your chin up, the shoulder can turn around it. From there, you can really let it fly in the downswing.

Again, chin up, not down, promotes the shoulders turning in the backswing.

Try that the next time out and I promise you itll help you.

First things first; if you’re going to take up learning the game of golf, the first thing that you actually and literally come in contact with is your golf club. So it seems only logical that we start with the grip.

Understanding and establishing a proper grip is your first step. The grip sets the tone for all else to come. A good grip allows you to swing your club with control during full swings with maximum speed. It allows for you to bring the clubface squarely through the impact zone, and determines how much you club face rotation you get.

You’ll want to find a grip pressure that allows you to deliver enough force to the ball without the club twisting at impact; yet you don’t want your hands and forearms overly tight and stiff.

Grip pressure was once described by Sam Snead as though you are holding a bird in your hands and you want to hold tight enough that the bird can’t fly away yet not so tight as to hurt the bird.

For our purposes here and especially you are just learning how to grip the golf club, we’ll discuss gripping the club with a neutral type grip (neither favoring a draw or a fade).

In this position the “V’s” created with the thumb and forefinger as you address the golf ball will point just to the right of your chin (right handed golfer). In fact, with this grip, someone standing directly across from you would see only the first two knuckles of your left hand. So, two knuckles of the left hand showing and your “V’s” pointing to just right of your chin and you have a neutral – traditional type golf grip.

With your forefinger and little finger that meet underneath the club grip; you can either choose to overlap these to fingers or you can interlock them; whichever is more comfortable to you and gives you the most confidence.

Hold the club more toward your fingers than back in the palm of the hand. We want to be able to get a good natural wrist cock.

When you are first just introducing a golf club to your hands, don’t worry about whacking golf balls right away. Rather, get used to the grip first. As you next begin to learn about address and set up, spend time just swinging the club back and forth and get used to how the club and the grip feel. Don’t worry too much hitting a ball at this early juncture.

Down the road of your learning curve just bit, you’ll no doubt become curious about ‘drawing’ and or ‘fading’ the golf ball. Drawing or fading the golf ball begins with your grip. Although drawing or fading your golf shot goes beyond the scope of this article, I want to touch on this as it relates to our discussion on the grip.

Remembering your initial neutral grip that we discussed; if you want to grip to draw the ball you’ll rotate your hands/grip slightly clockwise. In other words, this will produce a three knuckle grip… up from your two knuckle grip we talked about earlier. To grip to fade the ball, you’ll go a knuckle the other way. So, you will reduce your neutral two knuckle grip down one to a one knuckle grip.

I mention this, not to imply that you will want to immediately want to begin working your golf shots from right to left and left to right; rather I want to give you a basic understanding how the golf grip works first from the neutral hand position.

Lets spend a couple of minutes talking about one of the three most abused and misunderstood golf swing fundamentals, timing. Its an important term but its misused a lot. So, let me explain to you what timing is, and then itll draw you a lot closer to understanding when you’re struggling.

Timing is your ability to swing your arms and hands back to the golf ball as your hip turns out of the way. And the reason it has to turn out of the way is so the arms and hands can pass your body and wrap around you. Thats the definition, no more, no less.

Now, I have gone to the golf course many days where Ive hit the ball beautifully, solid, straight right. So, my timing was off a bit because my body was turning out in front of my golf club and that was sending it off to the right.

Now, the correction would be to slow the bottom half down and speed up the top part. There have been days where my timing has been off because the arms and hands were quicker than the bottom.

How do you correct that? Speed up the bottom and itll catch up with the arms and hands, and that will help that.

Now, how do you fix your timing? Thats probably the most difficult question in the game of golf. How do you get your timing back? I believe that if you cant hit your pitching wedge, you probably arent hitting your 5 iron and your 5 wood and your driver.

So, I love to send people out to the practice facility to hit thousands of pitching wedges and work on their golf swing fundamentals. That, to me, is the easiest way to find your timing.

Now, lets say that your favorite club in your golf bag is your driver and you’re driving the ball beautifully. Then go hit a thousand drivers. Or maybe its a 5 wood or a 5 iron. Whatever club you’re struggling with, stay way away from that one.

Go to the club that you’re doing well with. And if you’re not doing well with any of them, then go to a pitching wedge.

Now, the next question most difficult after that: How do you know when your timings off? I believe that your timing is off when your miss/hit pattern is not consistent. Ones fat, ones thin, ones top, ones good, ones to the left, ones to the right. Thats a great indication that your timings off.

Find your favorite club and go to the practice tee and hit ten thousand of them and remember when you hit the golf ball to think of the golf swing fundamentals.

The game of golf is not only physically but also mentally challenging. It is a strategic game that has many fans around the world. Golf is played by hitting a golf ball using golf clubs on an area called the teeing ground. Once the ball has been hit, it will travel along fairways and into the next prepared area, where a hole is found. This prepared area is known as the putting green.

Simply put, the target of the game is of course to put the ball into the hole in as few hits as possible. This means that a golfer has to complete the hole by hitting the golf ball from the teeing ground into the hole in the putting green using the golf club in as little strokes as possible. A round of golf usually means a play of 18 holes.

There are two basically two kinds of play in golf. In the match play, the winner is determined according to the number of holes lost and won. In the other kind of play, which is the stroke play, the winner is the golfer who uses the least number of strokes to complete a round.

In playing the game, there are two very fundamental rules to adhere to: Play the course as you find it; and play the ball as it is found.

Should the rules above be difficult for you to follow, keep in mind that you should at least play fair at all times. How do you determine what is fair and what is not? Read on and find out some rules which will give you a greater understanding on how to be a fair player in playing golf.

Do not stand, move or talk too close to a golfer who is about to make a stroke.

Play without any delay. Leave as soon as the other members in your group leave.

Try your best to play when everyone in your group is already out of the way.

Try to replace the divots as much as you can. And if you have walked into a bunker, don’t forget to smooth out all your footprints.

It is not advisable for you to drop your golf clubs on the putting green, so avoid it at all cost.

Rules to Playing Golf

Before you start on your round of golf, take some time to read the local rules which are stated on the scorecard that you hold. After reading the rules, it is a good idea for you to mark which golf ball you will be using, which will make it easier for you to identify it. Several golfers may be suing the same brand of golf balls as you, In this case, it would be easy to see which golf ball belongs to you.

Before you start, make sure you have counted your golf clubs. You are allowed a maximum of fourteen golf clubs.

When beginning the actual play, make sure you tee off in front of your tee markers. Should your tee off be a little bit off, or outside of the area specified, you may be asked to repeat your stroke. If this happens in a match play, then you are lucky as there will be no penalty for you. However, if this happens in a stroke play, then you are given a two-stroke penalty. That is why it is important for you to tee off in the specified area.

When you are playing, should your ball lie in a water hazard or a bunker, remember not to hit or touch the water or bunker in any way before you do your downswing.

The ball should never be spooned or pushed: it should always be struck fairly.

It is all right if you want to mark the ball that you are using. You could also clean your ball: just lift it, clean and put it back exactly where it was previously.

In the case of dropping a ball, the best way to do so would be to stand straight and to hold your golf ball at the length of your shoulder, and to drop it gently. Should you, in dropping the ball, happen to strike another player, the caddie or even yourself, you must drop the ball again. This is done with no penalty.

It would also be all right for you to pick up your ball if by doing so you would assist another player. On the other hand, you may also lift any other ball if that ball is interfering with your playing or another player.

By remembering the basic rules of golf as well as the basic common courtesies of playing golf fairly, you will make the game more enjoyable for you and others.

Golf swing drills and training is never going to be fun, but practicing is an important aspect of golf that must be done to consistently hit the golf ball straight and accurately. The question is what type of training should you implement into your golf routine? The following three golf swing tips will help you to hit the ball at a whole new level.

1. The first thing to work on is a proper stance. Keep your feet as wide as your shoulder with the ball between your feet. Your back should be straight, not hunched over. Angle your left foot slightly to the left with your right foot straight ahead. Keep your head down with your eyes focused on the golf ball until after you hit the ball, there is no need to immediately turn to look at the flight path of your shot.

2 Next work on your grip.This will take fine-tuning until you comfortable during the golf swing. You do not want your grip to be weak, but at the same time not overly firm A week grip will often cause the golf ball to slice. A strong grip will not allow the golf club face to rotate into the correct position at the time you are striking the ball. Practice swinging the club until it feels comfortable with the golf clubs that you are using as every set is slightly different.

3. A great way to improve your swing is to video yourself so you can analyze what your swing looks like. This was a great benefit to me and I realized how awkward I really looked when I was teeing off. Plus if you do this with your buddies, you can scrutinize each other’s swings and see what you are doing wrong.
