Finding your perfect golf club grip is the first thing you should do. It takes time and practice to do that. But if you choose correct golf aid you can do it faster. But still it takes some practice to achieve your goal.

Choosing right golfing aid is important too. You should choose the one which has a lot of positive feedback. Personally I have tried a loads of golf swing aids and only few really helped me to cut few strokes of my game. I was very happy when I found aid which helped me to improve my golf swing. There are three basic grip types. You should try them all and choose one which is best for you. There are never ending discussions about which golf grip type is the best. But in my opinion they are all same.

Here are those three grip types :

Overlapping grip type. Overlapping grip type setup: Little finger of one hand placed over index finger of other hand.

Interlocking grip type. Setup: Similar to the overlapping grip setup just those to finger are interlocked instead of overlapped.

Baseball grip type. Setup: Those two finger do not overlap or interlock, they just meet together.

Try all those grip types and choose the one which is most comfortable to you.

The grip is your only connection with the club so it follows that a good golf grip is an essential component of a good swing and good golf game.

Placing your hands properly on the golf club helps you better control the position of the club’s face at impact. During the swing your body turns to create power. Since the body is rotating, the golf club must rotate at the same rate. In other words, the body and the club must turn together as a team.

A fundamentally sound golf grip helps you create both power and feel. The action of your wrists is a source of power so gripping the club too much in the palm of your hand reduces wrist action.

Since our fingers are the most sensitive parts of our hands, placing the club more in the fingers rather than in the palm increases the amount of wrist hinge, which results in longer tee shots and more feel.

Regardless of the type of golf grip you choose, a sound golf grip involves light grip pressure. Gripping the club too tight can cause thin, weak shots that slice. A lighter grip also enhances wrist hinge. This light pressure also increases the amount of clubface rotation, improving your chances of squaring the club at impact.

The Vardon overlap, sometimes called the overlapping grip, is the most common golf grip. Most golf instructors use this grip popularized by Harry Vardon around the turn of the 20th century. To correctly use this grip, take the little finger on your trailing hand and place it between the index and middle finger on your lead hand (for right-handed golfers, the lead hand is the left). The lead hand thumb should fit right along the lifeline of the trailing hand.

The next most common golf grip is called the interlock or interlocking. Several top players, including Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, use this grip. This grip locks the hands together. You might, however, find that the handle migrates to your palms which reduces wrist action and, therefore, power. People with small hands, weak forearms and wrists, and beginners often prefer this grip. To use the interlock grip, take the little finger on your trailing hand and intertwine it with the index finger on your lead hand. The lead hand thumb should fit in the lifeline of the trailing hand.

The ten finger grip (sometimes called the baseball grip) is the least preferred golf grip among instructors but it does have its advantages. It can be good for beginners and people who experience joint pain, have arthritis or small, weak hands. To position your hands properly using a ten finger grip, start with a perfect lead hand grip. Place the little finger of the trailing hand close against the index finger of the lead hand. Cover the lead hand thumb with the lifeline of the trailing hand.

The ideal golf grip is a comfortable medium between tense and loose.

The Vardon grip, or the overlapping grip, is the most common and popular way to hold a club presently. In this method, the little finger of the right hand overlaps the forefinger of the left hand. Thus the left-hand pinky covers or wraps the right-hand forefinger.

Many great players such as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Kite, and Tiger Wood have the interlocking grip, which is the least common of grips. In this method, the left-hand pinky slips between forefinger and middle finger on the right hand and thus the left pinky and the right forefinger interlock.

Golf Grip

“Golf begins with a great grip,” says David Leadbetter. The Interlocking Grip is where the right little finger and the left index finger are locked together. Experiment with your grip by hitting balls with the different grips to see what works best. Golf and baseball have similar grips, but remember, they are different in both sports. Baseball players grip the bat more in their palms. Golfers should grip the club more in the base of the fingers.

Address

When addressing the ball, both arms are straight but relaxed, and the left shoulder is higher than the right due to the position of the hands. The “slicer” tends to keep too much weight on the front leg at address for all shots, which restricts the shoulder turn and encourages a steep out-to-in swing. Proper posture at the address position sets up the ability for you to execute the golf swing correctly. Flexibility as it pertains to posture allows you to place your body in the correct address position.

Backswing

The backswing now starts with the initial rotation – shoulders, hips, hands and arms – an almost simultaneous movement. If the take-away is one-piece, there is very little stress on the elbow. From the top of the backswing to the ball is less that one forth of a second. Getting the club inside during the backswing is usually disastrous and a fast backswing will create bad motion and a hands dominated swing that will be hard to repeat. Try hitting balls making a backswing from about hip high with your 7 irons just focusing on shifting back and shifting and firing through-you will get so much power and accuracy you might wonder why you take the club all the way to the top.

Downswing

The object of the downswing is to return the club head to the ball with maximum controllable speed. The downswing begins by pushing your weight from right to left and rotating the body and hips. The motion should be unbroken from the start of the downswing to the finish of the follow through.

Impact the Golf Ball

On impact the hips are turned with the shoulders parallel to the ball. Often less accomplished players break down at impact, cupping their lead wrist, losing power early and decreasing their accuracy. Something else that I strongly emphasize and explain in detail is how to use extension and timing to work with the centrifugal force and momentum to create a whip like action through impact. Oh, and by the way, this is not the time to take your eyes off the ball.

Follow Though

The motion should be unbroken from the start of the downswing to the finish of the follow through. For example, Tiger Woods allows the club head momentum to extend his follow-through far around his back, completing a long and smooth club head rotation.

Sometimes when we understand or are reminded of the simple parts of something, it can help us figure out what we need to do to improve. Pick something, work on it, own it, and then move on. Focus and you will see results.

You have to experiment to find the proper grip level for yourself. Make sure that you’re holding the golf grip correctly too. Golf Swing Basic Tip #3: A big mistake that many new players make is in their backswing: they just casually raise the club for the backswing. If you do this, then you’ll have to correct it or chances are, you won’t hit the ball far. When you do your backswing, you should be twisting your body. When you do this, the energy in your muscles is stored as potential energy. When the downswing comes, all of your potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, which transfers to the ball and sends it flying. So as I said before, you need to twist your body to generate a hitting momentum. Then as you’re winding up, next comes the backswing…

Golf Swing Basic Tip #4: In order to get a good backswing, you have to make sure your entire movement is 100% smooth. Your backswing is more essential for hitting the ball further, but when you’re going in for the down swing, make sure you bring your club’s head downwards swiftly. Remember that only your arms and upper body should be doing the swinging; not your wrists and hands!

Golf Swing Basic Tip #5: In conjunction with golf swing basic tips #3 and 4, your pivot movement has to be done correctly. As I said before, your upper body movement has to be correct – if you’re right handed, then your left shoulder and hips have to be aligned correctly as your weight is being transferred to your right foot (vice versa for left-handed people). Remember to keep your entire movement swift and smooth.

Just keep all five of these important golf swing basic fundamentals in your head as you’re playing. Keep a clam mind and stay focused – you’ll eventually master these after playing for a while. Follow these golf swing basic fundamentals and you’ll notice your strokes dropping in no time.

First things first; if you’re going to take up learning the game of golf, the first thing that you actually and literally come in contact with is your golf club. So it seems only logical that we start with the grip.

Understanding and establishing a proper grip is your first step. The grip sets the tone for all else to come. A good grip allows you to swing your club with control during full swings with maximum speed. It allows for you to bring the clubface squarely through the impact zone, and determines how much you club face rotation you get.

You’ll want to find a grip pressure that allows you to deliver enough force to the ball without the club twisting at impact; yet you don’t want your hands and forearms overly tight and stiff.

Grip pressure was once described by Sam Snead as though you are holding a bird in your hands and you want to hold tight enough that the bird can’t fly away yet not so tight as to hurt the bird.

For our purposes here and especially you are just learning how to grip the golf club, we’ll discuss gripping the club with a neutral type grip (neither favoring a draw or a fade).

In this position the “V’s” created with the thumb and forefinger as you address the golf ball will point just to the right of your chin (right handed golfer). In fact, with this grip, someone standing directly across from you would see only the first two knuckles of your left hand. So, two knuckles of the left hand showing and your “V’s” pointing to just right of your chin and you have a neutral – traditional type golf grip.

With your forefinger and little finger that meet underneath the club grip; you can either choose to overlap these to fingers or you can interlock them; whichever is more comfortable to you and gives you the most confidence.

Hold the club more toward your fingers than back in the palm of the hand. We want to be able to get a good natural wrist cock.

When you are first just introducing a golf club to your hands, don’t worry about whacking golf balls right away. Rather, get used to the grip first. As you next begin to learn about address and set up, spend time just swinging the club back and forth and get used to how the club and the grip feel. Don’t worry too much hitting a ball at this early juncture.

Down the road of your learning curve just bit, you’ll no doubt become curious about ‘drawing’ and or ‘fading’ the golf ball. Drawing or fading the golf ball begins with your grip. Although drawing or fading your golf shot goes beyond the scope of this article, I want to touch on this as it relates to our discussion on the grip.

Remembering your initial neutral grip that we discussed; if you want to grip to draw the ball you’ll rotate your hands/grip slightly clockwise. In other words, this will produce a three knuckle grip… up from your two knuckle grip we talked about earlier. To grip to fade the ball, you’ll go a knuckle the other way. So, you will reduce your neutral two knuckle grip down one to a one knuckle grip.

I mention this, not to imply that you will want to immediately want to begin working your golf shots from right to left and left to right; rather I want to give you a basic understanding how the golf grip works first from the neutral hand position.

New grips promote better golf shots

Newer grips promote a good golf swing and better release at contact benefiting all levels of player. The proper size of grip reduces the tension in your hands helping you make a better shot.

Experts advise golfers to have their grips replaced at least once a season.

With new grips your golf club should feel good in your hands and you should feel confident and connected to the club head.

The Correct Grip Size

Not only does the age and condition of your grips affect the way you hold the golf club the size of the grips is equally important. The correct grip size is probably the most important part of having a good grip.

If the grip is too small the club could twist in your hands, the result of tightening your grip and squeezing the club at the bottom of the swing. The result is a closed club face at impact.

When the grip is too large the club could come loose at impact, opening the club face, resulting in a slice.

In either case, too small or too large, you’re not going to make a good, solid impact with the ball and never achieve any level of consistency.

How to Check your Grip Size

If you have a proper fitting golf glove you can simply check the size; small, medium or large. Alternatively, you can check with your existing clubs.

If there is space between your fingers and palm when you wrap your leading hand around the grip, when setting up to address the ball, your grip size is too large. If the tips of your fingers are digging into your palm then your grip size is too small.

Your grip size is correct when your middle and third fingers just touch the pad of your palm.

Re-gripping your Clubs

Golf grips are available in many styles and sizes and are fairly easy and fast to replace. It can be done at your club by your professional or with a little trial & error you can quickly and easily regrip your own clubs.

The feel of having new grips is almost like having a new set of clubs. Re-gripping will not only make your clubs feel new again but with new, correct sized grips you will have better traction and the tack to provide the basis for better golf shots.
