Are you one of the thousands of bogey golfers who are wondering why golf is such a difficult game? I know I was, and then it struck me.

Golf is just way too complicated.

Really think about this for a moment. What other sport has 14 pieces of personal equipment required (your golf clubs)? In baseball the player has a glove and a bat. In hockey the guy has a stick. A soccer player has…well, actually he doesn’t have any personal equipment.

Not only do you have a lot of equipment, you have to learn a very complicated method to use it all. Most of the time we call this a proper golf swing. Many times however, we refer to this movement as topping the ball, or hitting fat, or chunking or just plain hacking. The so called proper golf swing is really not designed for the amateur golfer.

One analyst has broken down the golf swing into 64 separate movements. Can you imagine memorizing 64 movements much less thinking about them in the swing? Me neither.

So are all of those movements necessary to accomplish the mission; the mission being able to hit the ball and have it go where we want. I don’t think so.

If you were the CEO of a manufacturing business and you wanted to optimize your operation you might do a cost benefit analysis of all the lines in your plant. In other words, you would want to know what benefit you received for the cost of performing an individual process.

Here come the great golf swing tips.

You can apply the same concept to the golf swing and one of the very first things to go would be the wrist cock. Yes I know all the video golf swing tips and books talk about the power that comes from cocking and uncocking your wrist, but how much are you really giving up by eliminating it?

The biggest mistake amateurs make is the over the top golf swing. Typically the problem is in too flat a take away and then the golfer has to come “over the top” of that swing plane in an attempt to correct it. Now think what happens when you cock your wrist. Do you have total control of that moving club head? Is there a possibility of coming off the plane? And when you uncock, is there a possibility that you will do it too early or too late. What’s the result if any of that happens. A crummy golf shot, that’s what happens.

Want more proof?

The next time you go to the range pick out a target then pick a club, any club, and hit the ball with your usual swing and note where it goes. Now using the same club, try a swing where you don’t cock your wrist. Just keep your left arm straight and see what happens. I’m going to guess that you lose a little distance but that the ball was directly on line with the target. You have eliminated one of the most complex elements of the swing and have gained the benefit of the ball going where you want it to go. Your cost is the loss of some distance which probably means with the wrist cock your slice went further into the other fairway.

If you can make the game of golf simple then you will keep the ball in play more often which will result in lower scores. Breaking 90 is not an impossible goal.

So how do you make sure your grip is correct?

placement of the left hand on the club. The left hand is the
first point of contact between you the golfer and the club.

The
correct grip with the left hand is what allows the proper hinge
of the wrists that positions the club to swing freely through
the ball.

A big problem for a lot of golfers is that the grip can look
right from the outside, when the hand is on the club. But you need
to take a closer look and see what’s underneath.

Many golfers have the shaft of the club running high on the palm of
the left hand. This inhibits your wrist hinge, which can cause you
both distance on your golf shots, as well as accuracy.

The shaft of the club should run diagonally across your hand from
the base of your little finger to the middle of your index finger.

While this is still primarily a palm grip, you’ll feel the grip
a lot more in your fingers than when the club was running higher
up on your palm.

This adjustment in your golf grip will allow you more flexibility
in your left wrist, allowing for a greater range of motion in your
hinge that is necessary to generate clubhead speed through the impact
of the ball.

Swing the club, don’t throw it.

To give yourself the best chance at hitting the green in regulation, you need to maximize your power off the tee without sacrificing control.

Your swing is capable of exerting a powerful natural force on the clubhead. Work with this force to help you swing the club rather than throwing it at the ball, which can result in every kind of bad shot. Even the best golfers tend to throw the clubhead on occasion, but here’s how to avoid it.

Take your normal stance over the ball and look closely at your grip. Locate the point on the grip were the first knuckle joint of the first figure of your right hand contacts the club. That pad is the precise spot where you can sense the weight of the club throughout your swing. Your goal is to develop the sensation of clubhead weight against this pressure point all the way through your swing. On the down swing, if you throw the clubhead at all, you’ll have lost that sense of clubhead weight and the club will feel very light. To avoid this, concentrate on feeling the sensation of the shaft lying against your first finger pad all the way through impact. As you practice this technique, you’ll swing the clubhead through impact with more consistency and power.

How to nail short approaches.

You obviously need good aim to knock down the flag, but for most players, getting it close is more a product of distance control. This is especially true as you get closer to the green. Use the following drills to sharpen your distance control.

Full swings from 80 to 130 yards. Hit shots to a green on your range that is within this distance. Select a club that allows you to easily get your ball to the back of the green. Identify the back, middle and front of the green as your targets. If distance control is not your strength, try hitting several shots to the same target. Once you get proficient, begin rotating targets. Hit one ball to each target and move on.

Partial swings from 30 to 80 yards. Select five targets within these distances. Look for things like bare spots, leaves, tire marks, dark spots, bumps or gullys on the range.

The same rules apply here. The difference is that there are now five targets covering a lot more distance. You can never be too good at distance control, and the rewards for the work you do will be immediate and substantial in the form of lower scores
